Book Review: Legends and Lattes

Book Review: Legends and Lattes

When I first heard about Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree, I wasn’t sure what to expect. A “cozy fantasy” about an orc who opens a coffee shop? It sounded intriguing but unusual. I decided to give it a try—and I’m so glad I did. This book feels like a warm hug, perfect for when you need something comforting and heartwarming. It will definitely end up among my best favorites of 2024!

The story follows Viv, an orc mercenary who’s done with fighting and danger. Instead, she dreams of opening a coffee shop in a town where no one has even heard of coffee. Watching her build this dream from the ground up—hiring staff, overcoming challenges, and introducing the magic of coffee—is surprisingly captivating.

The characters really make this story shine. There’s Cal, the gruff but skilled carpenter; Thimble, the shy ratkin baker whose pastries are legendary; and Tandri, the succubus with a knack for creativity and customer service. Together, they create a space that feels like home—not just for them, but for the reader too.

What sets this book apart is its simplicity. There’s no grand battle or epic quest, and that’s the point. It’s about the small joys in life: a perfect latte, a good friend, and the satisfaction of chasing a dream. Baldree’s writing is easygoing and cozy, making it feel like you’re sitting by the fire, listening to a story from an old friend.

Of course, if you’re looking for high-stakes drama or intense action, this book might not be for you. But if you want a story that leaves you smiling and feeling warm inside, Legends & Lattes is just the thing.

I can’t recommend this book enough. It’s a story about friendship, fresh starts, and the simple magic of finding where you belong. If you haven’t read it yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up—you’ll be glad you did.
